Frequently Asked Questions

  • Backing fabric should exceed the dimensions of your quilt top by 6 inches around. This allows us to clamp the backing to the quilt frame on the top, bottom and sides to create the proper tension for machine quilting. Without this tension, there will be excessive movement of the quilt during the stitching process as the machine tends to pull the quilt in from the sides. This could create a number of issues such as: poor thread tension, snagged fabric, inability to maintain a square quilt top, puckering, etc.

    Example: A 60” x 60” quilt top will have a backing fabric that measures 72” x 72”.

  • We do not trim quilts unless you have asked us to as an add-on service or we are providing a binding service along with your quilting service. Trimming consists of removing the excess batting and backing fabric from all sides. We ask that you square your quilt top prior to drop-off and we keep the quilt as square as possible on the longarm. For this reason, we will not cut into your quilt sandwich when trimming.

    Our trimming service costs $10.

  • We supply Quilters Dream 100% cotton, 80/20 cotton/poly, 100% poly and 100% wool batting. Each batting provides a different outcome in your project and is usually a personal preference.

100% cotton is great if you do not pre-wash your quilt fabrics and want an all natural batting. This option allows the fabrics to shrink at a similar rate in the first wash and often creates an aged, puckering effect of a well-loved quilt. It also provides excellent breathability and is lighter weight, making it the more versatile option for year-round quilt use. *The majority of quilters choose this option.

80/20 Cotton/Poly is better for pre-washed fabrics. It has less shrinkage in the first wash, therefore, reducing the wrinkling effect you get with 100% cotton. It’s also a slightly warmer option due to the polyester content.

100% Poly is a synthetic batting that doesn’t shrink in the wash, is economical in price and lightweight. It creates a stiffer quilt with less drape than cotton.

100% Wool is all natural and has excellent breathability like cotton, is lightweight and holds its shape when quilting, similar to 100% polyester. Due to its higher loft, it creates high thread definition when quilting and is preferred when you want to show your quilt off. Wool is the warmest option and is best used during the cool season.

  • We always use the same thread color on the top and in the bobbin. This helps avoid tension issues that can sometimes be caused by using two different threads. Additionally, there is no way to guarantee that only one color will show on either side of the quilt since the top and bobbin interlock in the quilting process.

  • We offer repairs on unquilted tops during processing only. In the past, this has been repairing open seams, correcting a quilt block placement and redoing the border to remove excess fabric that creates waves during quilting. We do not repair completed quilts.

  • When loaded onto the longarm frame, quilts have uniform tension. The top and bottom are pinned to leaders and the sides are clamped to tensioners. Quilt piecing is not naturally uniform. There may have been times when the fabric was pushed or pulled during piecing, tucks or folds are sometimes created during piecing and borders are especially common for having excess fabric that creates waves. This is mainly due to sewing one long strip and attaching the border vs. measuring each side and cutting exactly what one needs before connecting.

Longarm quilters have ways of reducing these problem areas but are not magicians. We can only work with what we’re given. That said, Coffee Cake Quilt Company strongly believes that every quilt is worthy of quilting. We don’t discriminate against quilting experience and try our best to accommodate all skill levels.

  • We offer 40 wt. Glide polyester thread in 39 colors. We have a wide range of neutrals and every color of the rainbow.

We also have several variegated options with an upcharge of 0.5 cents per square inch.

We do not accept thread requests for what we don’t have but you are welcome to bring your own brand name thread. Please keep in mind that thread quality matters and cotton creates excess lint and often breaks. This option will create more starts/stops on your quilt. We will not quilt with serger thread.
